Lock 8 Gateway Park

If there’s one thing Port Colborne does better than anywhere else in Niagara, it’s watching a 700-foot laker glide through a lock close enough to touch. Lock 8 Gateway Park sits right on the Welland Canal, and its elevated viewing platform puts you eye-to-eye with the ships as they’re raised or lowered on their way between Lake Erie and the rest of the Great Lakes. It’s free, it’s easy, and kids especially love it — count the ships, wave at the crew, feel the horn blast when a vessel clears the gates. Beyond the platform, the park has flower gardens, a fountain, a picnic pavilion, and the Algoport Skate and BMX Park, styled to look like a freight ship itself. Bring a blanket and make an afternoon of it, or just stop by for twenty minutes on your way through town — either way works. Ship schedules move with the seasons and the lake, so a quick check before you go means better odds of catching one in the lock. Weekday mornings tend to be quieter if you want the platform to yourselves. It’s the kind of low-key, no-cost thing to do that ends up being everyone’s favourite part of the trip.
